PARISH CHURCH OF SAN MARTINO

Probably already around the year 1000 there was a place of worship in the town of Rezzo of which there are no visible traces or certain documentation. This religious building is mentioned in some documents from 1392. The foundation of a certain chapel by Giovanni Bonfante dedicated to Saint Catherine dates back to 1440; six years later it was the Marquis Clavesana who erected the chapel at the altar of the Rosary and the tomb of the Marquis family was in this very place.

Over the centuries, the church of San Martino has undergone several restoration and conservation works first by the marquis Gaspare Clavesana, due to the severe deterioration, and after by Nicolò Clavesana. It was the latter who wanted to change the entrance to the east, and therefore in the direction of the local castle. The works lasted for about twelve years. Subsequently the church was modified again, however retaining the original Baroque style with a simple facade.

The interior has a single nave, with a deep presbytery and with the presence of six side altars. Among the preserved works, the baptismal font in black stone bearing the noble coat of arms of the Marquises Clavesana, the work of the master stonemasons of Cenova, the painting of San Martino and a triptych of considerable value are of considerable interest.
